Beetsteel: Grupo Arliz’s metalworking company manufactures fire-protection walkways for Notre-Dame Cathedral

A Portuguese company is responsible for manufacturing part of the metal safety structures installed at the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Beetsteel, a Grupo Arliz company specialising in metalworking, manufactured the walkways designed to support firefighting operations and enhance the monument’s safety in the event of a fire.

The intervention forms part of the cathedral’s complex restoration project, following the fire in April 2019 that caused significant damage to the building, particularly to its roof and timber structure. As part of this operation, various solutions have been implemented not only to restore the heritage site, but also to strengthen its fire safety measures.

The structures manufactured by Beetsteel are part of this protection system. The elements represented in the project are associated with fire compartmentation solutions offering two hours of fire resistance, ensuring the necessary conditions for protecting access routes and technical areas and facilitating the intervention of emergency services.

According to Patrícia Vieira, Beetsteel’s Director, taking part in this project represents another step in consolidating the company’s international presence, particularly in the French market, where it has been involved in a range of metalworking projects.

“It is a source of great pride for us to take part in a project such as the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral and to contribute, even indirectly, to improving the monument’s safety. It is also recognition of the capabilities of Portuguese manufacturing and, in this case, Beetsteel, to meet the demands of highly challenging international projects”.

Beetsteel’s involvement in the restoration of Notre-Dame adds to a portfolio of projects completed by the company in France and Monaco, including the Viaduc des Rochers Noirs in Soursac, the La Rose de Cherbourg and Gare de l’Est projects in Paris, and the Mareterra project in Monaco. Its involvement in these projects has helped strengthen the company’s international presence and its expertise in delivering metal structures for highly complex projects.

With a history spanning more than eight centuries, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris began construction in 1163 and stands as one of the most emblematic examples of French Gothic architecture. Located on the Île de la Cité, in the heart of Paris, it is one of the city’s foremost architectural and cultural symbols and one of France’s most internationally recognised monuments.
